The Bible Opening Up the Mystery of the Universe

From reading the title of this quarter’s main topic, you may wonder what exactly does a blessed human life entail? Does it mean to have a life with a big house, a fast car, and a high-paying job? No, in actuality, it is a life that is in line with the purpose of our human life. So what is the purpose of human life? The purpose of human life is to have God in your life. However, to fully experience this, we need to know who God is.

John 11:25 says,

Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes into Me, even if he should die, shall live…

In this verse, we can see that God, who is Jesus, is life. But what does “life” truly mean? In Greek, there are three different words that describe life: bios, psuche, and zoe. Bios refers to our physiology or to the life of our physical body, involving the processes that physically keep us alive and breathing. Psuche refers to our soul or psychology, encompassing our mind, emotion, and will. Lastly, zoe is the eternal, uncreated life of God. When Jesus says that He is “the life,” He is saying that He is the unique, eternal, uncreated life of God.

God has always wanted man to receive His life. Even in the beginning of the Bible, in the book of Genesis, we see that God wanted man to receive this life.

Genesis 2:8-9 says,

And Jehovah God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there He put man who He had formed. And out of the ground Jehovah God caused to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, as well as the tree of life in the middle of the garden and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

Imagine you are invited to a friend’s house. They take you into the dining room and set a plate of food in front of you. What do you do with the food? Well, you eat it of course! This scenario can be likened to these verses in Genesis. God formed man and put him in front of the tree of life, which was in the middle of the garden. This shows that, even from the beginning, God wanted man to eat from the tree of life! The tree of life symbolizes God Himself as the eternal life, meaning it was always God’s plan for man to receive God as life; the purpose of our human life.

How can we receive God’s life? Practically, this can be done by coming to God in the Word. When we come to the Bible, we do not just come to pages and letters in a book, we come to a living Person. This Person is living and wants to be one with us and expressed through us. When we spend time with Him in the Word, He dispenses His life into us, so we can live out this blessed human life – a life where we receive God as the eternal life.
