God’s desire is for His believers to be one. The Bible reveals that we have already received and currently have the Spirit of oneness within us. Ephesians 4:3 states,
“Being diligent to keep the oneness of the Spirit in the uniting bond of peace…”
We have the oneness of the Triune God within us already! Nothing can separate the three of Triune God, who is the very substance and element of our oneness. From this verse we see that we must be diligent to keep the oneness of the Spirit. This is by our caring for the Spirit within us and by our obeying its leading. It is only through our being one with the indwelling Spirit that we can be one with the other believers. Ephesians 4:13 says,
“Until we all arrive at the oneness of the faith…”
Although we have the way to be one with the believers, which is the Spirit Himself, there are still many obstacles preventing the believers from being one. Today many believers are divided over different doctrines, practices and traditions. Ephesians 4:13 reveals that regardless of our doctrinal beliefs and preferred practices, we all have one common faith. Our oneness as believers should be grounded in this common faith. Romans 14:3 states,
“He who eats, let him not despise him who does not eat; and he who does not eat, let him not judge him who eats, for God has received him…”
It is the lack of a spirit of generality among the believers which presents obstacles to our receiving one another. We must realize that despite the different practices among Christians, as long as they are genuine believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, then God has received them, and we must receive them as well. Our focus should be on Christ and Christ alone. We must drop everything that divides us from the other believers and be diligent to keep the oneness of the Spirit.
